New Photography Annual 2010

During a photo shoot, so much emphasis is placed on the perfect shot and often it is such a small second in time when this takes place. As set-designers, we wanted to explore the beauty surrounding this moment by celebrating the enormous anticipation and frantic but methodical work that goes into setting up a photo shoot and also the aftermath; the moment of calm reflection when the shoot has been wrapped. For this project, the action shot; the noisy, colourful, sparkly, messy explosion of balloons, party-poppers, glitter cannons and paint tubes making up The Photography Annual’s ‘P’ is missing. Photographed by Annie Collinge.

Lovestruck

Music video for “Love Struck’ by Man Like Me; Art Direction and concept in collaboration with Jamie Brown. We based the concept on some naff pop-up cards that Lauren picked up on a trip to India. Knowing of the OTT, colourful, kitsch look that Man Like Me are all about, we pitched a life size, handmade and pop-up card environment where the band members could move from card to card and interact with each to bring the narrative from the song ‘Lovestruck’ to life.

Director: Rollo Jackson
Art Direction: Jiggery Pokery & Jamie Brown
D.O.P: Lorry Powles
Stylist: Georgia Broaders
Hair & Make-up: Molly Portsmouth

The Complete History of Food

In collaboration with Bompas & Parr we constructed a Renaissance banqueting house in the shape of a giant cake. Bompas & Parr’s Iris-infused jellies were displayed on a bespoke oversized revolving cake and surrounded by a magical landscape of sugar sculptures.

Stretch a Sketch

Using sport as inspiration, we were asked to challenge the function of a pair of NIKE shoes for NIKE78. We wanted to challenge the use of NIKE trainers in sport by combining sport and art in homage to our childhood TV legends Rolf and Neil. We developed a sport that we would want to be involved in, that would make our heroes proud. For us, sport is really about doing something physical rather than a spectator event. The same goes for our projects, all physical, they look fun on the surface but are hard work underneath.

As kids neither of us were allowed NIKE shoes and so had to do sports day in Hi-Techs instead. Constantly mortified and not wanting to be seen for fear of embarrassing ourselves. Things have clearly changed.
